My work is rooted in my interest in myth and ritual. With the current series of collage pieces, I am combining finely deconstructed text and pattern from both self-generated and found sources into mosaic-like metaphysical landscape fragments that reference sacred geometry, visionary and folk art, and medieval manuscript paintings. The process of breaking down and reassembling advertising ephemera—as well as one's own previous artistic efforts—mirrors the process of psychological death and rebirth that is characteristic of the world's great mystic traditions. This in turn mirrors the role of the decomposers in an ecosystem: digesting the bodies of the ancestors in order to fertilize the soil for new growth.
